The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is focused on promoting environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests.

The ten basic Principles and associated Criteria of the FSC aim to meet these three tenets of sustainability within the context of forest management. Regional standards, based on the basic Principles and Criteria, are developed by Regional Working Groups through a multi-stakeholder process to reflect local realities.

Where regional standards are in place, accredited certifiers such as IMS International must assess forest operations against criteria that meet these minimum requirements. The FSC Secretariat monitors the work of their accredited certifiers worldwide.
